Evergreen Man Accused Of Shooting, Killing Bear Cubs Enters Plea

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) - An Evergreen man accused of shooting and killing two bear cubs last September made his plea Monday morning.

Daniel Clay Williams, 50, appeared at Jefferson County Court and pleaded not guilty to two felonies. He faces charges of an illegal discharge of a firearm and aggravated cruelty to animals. He faces six other misdemeanor charges.

Williams told deputies that he had shot rubber bullets at the bears to scare them away from the trash, but when his dog got loose and fought with the mother bear he used live bullets. The mother bear climbed a tree and stayed there most of the day following the shootings.
