CDOT Triggers 300-Foot Long Slide For Avalanche Mitigation On Red Mountain Pass

OURAY, Colo. (CBS4) - The Colorado Department of Transportation on Monday closed U.S. 550 over Red Mountain Pass for avalanche mitigation but it has since reopened.

On Monday CDOT crews triggered a slide near the Mother Cline Mine that came down on U.S. 550. It was approximately 5 feet high and 300 feet long. The highway was closed from mile marker 72 to 92.

"Similar results were achieved further south at the East Riverside path," CDOT said in a Facebook post. "The gorge area, from Ouray south for 5 miles or so, received a whopping 18 inches of snow in the last 24 hours and the white stuff is still falling."

CDOT always recommends checking www.cotrip.org before head traveling.
