Aurora Girl Pays It Forward, Asks For Donations Instead Of Presents
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- One girl from Aurora is paying it forward after she asked for donations instead of Christmas presents. Now she's doing the same thing for her birthday.
"It's totally worth it. Because in the end, you realize how much of a difference you've made," said Kyra Dooley.
Kyra, 12, delivered more than 600 pounds of dog and cat food on Saturday to PawsCo, a local rescue and foster organization.
"It's hard to convince people not to buy her presents. So she really has to talk a lot of her family into, 'I don't want anything, I just want dog food,'" said Gina Dooley.
"Thank you so much for all your hard work and for being so supportive," said one PawsCo volunteer to Kyra.
"It's incredible to see the generosity of people in our community and for Kyra, she's so young and she gave up her Christmas for animals and people in need," said PawsCo President and CEO Tiana Nelson.
Making a difference is nothing new for Kyra. She's been choosing a different charity to donate to for every one of her birthdays and Christmas since she was nine years old.
One year she sent clothing and shoes to children in Africa and another year it was blankets for the homeless and then basic supplies for families in need.
"Normally people only get, they don't give, so it feels really nice," said Kyra.
Her mom hopes Kyra's efforts inspire other kids to do the same, "Just to take one birthday and make it about somebody else. And if all the kids would do that we could touch a lot of organizations that need help."
Kyra is in the process of starting her own non-profit organization called "My One Birthday" that encourages anyone to give back.
