Ice Floes Along Gunnison River Cause Fence Damage, Flooding

GUNNISON, Colo. (CBS4)- Ice floes along the Gunnison River are causing some problems on the Western Slope.

The huge chunks of ice have clogged the river near Esty Ranch north of Gunnison along the river.

The photographer, John Wilcox, says the ice has damaged some fences as it pushes up along the banks of the river. The frozen chunks have also caused some flooding in bordering hay pastures and residents hope it doesn't damage next year's crop.

Earlier this week, the Three Rivers Resort sent in pictures of the ice clogging the river in Almont, about 10 miles north of Gunnison.

The ice floes or ice dams are typical in that area during the spring thaw but despite temperatures below freezing, the ice continues to grow and move downstream.
