DENVER (CBS4) – Two people had to be rescued from a house engulfed in fire on Federal Boulevard early Monday morning.

Firefighters received the call at approximately 2:30 a.m. and worked to keep the fire contained to the house near Viking Park.

The fire began in the attic although the cause is unknown. The home has been deemed a total loss and suffered partial collapse of the roof.

Two people were escorted out of the home and one taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The fire was so dangerous that firefighters had to change tactics upon arrival.

“Ten to 15 minutes from the initial attack, Denver fire went to a defensive attack, instead of the offensive. They just felt that the scene had gotten a little out of hand, and for the safety of our firefighters we went defensive,” said Louis Cedillo from Denver Fire.

Some neighbors were forced to evacuate.

“All the pets, the kids, tried to grab stuff like clothes; we didn’t know what was going on really,” said neighbor Christopher Lindquist.

Federal Boulevard was closed temporarily from West 26th Avenue to West 29th Avenue, but reopened by 7 a.m.
