Police Search For Hit & Run Driver In Serious Crash New Year's Day

By Melissa Garcia

DENVER (CBS4)- Police in Denver are searching for the hit-and-run driver who caused a serious wreck on Interstate 25 at Interstate 225 early in the morning on New Year's Day. The crash left one person in critical condition.

Investigators have possession of the suspect's car and are hoping that will lead them to the person behind the wheel.

Around 4:15 a.m., a vehicle with four people inside was getting ready to enter the on-ramp to I-225 from I-25 northbound when police say the suspect vehicle made a sudden, illegal lane change onto the same ramp.

Police believe the suspect was attempting to make a last ditch effort to get on I-225 when the driver collided with the victims' car and pinned it against a guardrail.

One of the four people inside of the vehicle hit was ejected and rushed by ambulance to Denver Health with life-threatening injuries. The suspect driver took off, leaving his car behind.

"Upon the arrival of medical personnel, there was one party that was contacted who walked away from the scene of the incident. I don't know that we're secure in declaring alcohol as a contributing factor or not," said Denver Police Technician Tyrone Campbell.

Police closed two lanes of I-25 and the on-ramp to I-225 for several hours while officers investigated the hit-and-run accident.

"Any time you're dealing with parties that are involved in an accident who flee the scene, without leaving their information, without making sure that all of the parties involved are taken care of, it's concerning," said Campbell.

Police are looking for any information on the suspect vehicle, as well as additional witnesses who may have seen the crash. Anyone with information is urged to call police at (720) 913-2000.
