Man's Body Recovered After Ice Climbing Accident

ASPEN, Colo. (CBS4)- The man who died after an ice climbing accident near Redstone has been identified as Ryan Jennings.

Jennings, 42, went ice climbing around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Redstone and had not returned by 12:30 p.m.

Members of Mountain Rescue Aspen, Carbondale Fire and Rescue and deputies from the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office started searching for the climber in the popular ice climbing area located 17 miles south of Carbondale.

A friend who was familiar with the ice climbing area had hiked in to try to find Jennings. He told emergency personnel that an ice pillar that had supported Jennings broke loose and resulting in a fall.

Jennings fell from an unknown height and suffered severe trauma. He was alone at the time of the fall and was deceased by the time rescuers found him. Rescue crews recovered his body on Thursday.

The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office and the coroner's office plans to conduct an investigation of the area.
