AdAmAn Club Begins Traditional Hike Up Pikes Peak For Fireworks At The Summit

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- The AdAmAn Club's annual hike to the top of Pikes Peak as part of the New Year's Eve tradition to light off fireworks from the summit is underway.

The Pikes Peak AdAmAn Club has been climbing the 14,115-foot peak near Colorado Springs to ring in the new year since 1922. They also set off fireworks at the stroke of midnight.

"Our Club is dedicated to the memory of the original 'Frozen Five' -- Ed Morath, Fred Morath, Fred Barr, Willis Magee and Harry Standley. Their idea was that each year, only one new member would be added to the Club, and as a result, the name AdAmAn (add a man) was chosen. Each year, members choose one new member from a list of applicants," according to the group's website.

There are several events leading up to the main event which is reserved for midnight when AdAmAn puts on a full-fledged New Year's display courtesy of a trailer full of pyrotechnics hauled to the summit in advance via the Pikes Peak Highway.

According to the website, "At the stroke of midnight, they (the original group) lit their flares and the other fireworks they had hauled up the mountain, and built a huge bonfire of old railroad ties."
