Officer Accused Of Staging His Own Shooting Resigns From Force

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4) - A Commerce City police officer accused of staging his own shooting is no longer with the department.

Kevin Lord resigned from the force after being arrested earlier in November on false reporting charges. On Monday he appeared before a judge to face formal charges in an Adams County courtroom.

A judge decided Monday to not yet unseal several documents that could answer some questions of the bizarre case.

After Lord said he was shot Nov. 8 by a suspect he had stopped, who then got away, police launched a manhunt that lasted several days. Police even released a sketch of the alleged suspect.

"I am disappointed in the conclusion it has come to," Commerce City Police Chief Troy Smith said.

Police arrested Lord on charges of attempting to influence a public official, and false reporting.

Lord declined to comment after his first court appearance.

Commerce City police said he resigned from the police force on Nov. 18.

The district attorney's office says attempting to influence a public official is a Class 4 felony which could carry jail time.

Lord remains free on a $5,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 15.
