Recent Snow, Winds Create High Country Dangers

FRISCO, Colo. (CBS4) - It was a busy weekend for the Summit County Rescue Group.

"We had two calls that came in maybe 30 minutes of each other," team member Charles Pittman told CBS4 on Monday.

Pittman and others on his team rushed to three separate Summit County avalanches, all sliding within 24 hours of each other.

On Saturday a massive slide on the east ridge of Bald Mountain caught a skier in a wall of snow and ice.

"We knew that we were going to be fighting the sun, and as we were responding partway there we knew that the individual had a broken leg," Pittman said.

Crews raced to the injured skier, a man whose name isn't being released.

The man was skiing alone when he triggered the slide. Luckily, rescuers say he was able to dig himself out of the avalanche.

A Flight for Life helicopter crew then was able to make a difficult landing in the snow and take the man to a hospital.

"They actually helped a great deal in locating the slide and locating the victim," Pittman said.

Sunday brought two more big slides nearby. Rescue crews also responded to those to make sure no one was trapped.
