School's Swim Team Suffers A Setback After Vandals Strike

BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4) - Vandalism at a school in Brighton may be connected to a string of shootings in the city Halloween night.

Two windows were shot out with a BB gun at Brighton High School's pool late Saturday night, sending shards of glass in and around the pool.

"So they've had to drain it and they're going to wait until it dries to clean it," Carl Diehl, Brighton High School's swim coach, told CBS4 Wednesday. "Then they'll refill it probably not until a week from Friday."

The school has closed its pool until repairs are completed. With swim season set to begin in just a couple weeks, the Brighton Recreation Center reserved a few of its pool's lanes to allow the school's swim teams to practice.

"It is so generous for the rec center to open these lanes for us," said Chaziti Eaton, Brighton High School senior and swim team member. "But it's just really hot here and it's definitely a lot more crowded and there's a lot more noise so it's hard to hear our coach."

Coach Diehl echoed some of those frustrations during Wednesday night's practice.

"The water is a little too warm and we don't want to overheat them, but at least we're getting in some water time," Diehl said.

Brighton Police cannot say for certain if the incident at the school is related to the shootings of more than 30 car windows in the city that same night, but they're not ruling it out. Right now investigators do not have any suspect information, but Sara Pomrenke, a mother of a student at Brighton High School, believes some kids are up to no good.

"It is not funny, it's criminal," Pomrenke told CBS4. "They need to be held accountable."
