New Weekend Taxicab Stand In LoDo For Bar Patrons Who've Had Too Much To Drink

DENVER (CBS4) - In an effort to discourage drunk driving, the Denver Police, Public Works, and Excise & Licenses departments have teamed up to create temporary taxicab stands in LoDo on weekends.

One stand was installed at 20th and Blake streets on Friday and Saturday "to give patrons better access to safe rides home and to provide an alternative to hailing cabs from the street." It will be there for at least the next year.

Another existing stand at 14th and Market streets will continue to operate. They will be in operation from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.

"Drinking and driving is dangerous for our entire community," Denver Police Chief Robert White said in a statement. "The City of Denver partnering with the taxicab companies to have the stand available is a smart collaboration to ensure our citizens have easier access to a safe and responsible ride home."

Unfortunately, the only signage for the stand at 20th and Blake right outside of Coors Field was yellow bags over the parking meters and people CBS4 spoke with weren't aware of the stand at 14th and Market.

"I've never seen one here on the street, no. Definitely news to me," bar manager Craig Seidel said.

A parking enforcement officer also wasn't aware of the stand at 14th and Market.

"There isn't one, definitely not, it's all parking," Seidel said.

Additional Information From The Denver Police Department

If you have friends or family that frequent the downtown area on weekends, please spread the word about the taxicab stand. The more people that know about it, the safer the streets of Denver will be every weekend. To learn more about the stand, please call Metro Taxi headquarters at 303.336.9000.
