Denver Police, Sheriff Warns Of Phone Scam, Callers Ask For Money

DENVER (CBS4)- The Denver Sheriff and Denver Police Departments are warning people living in Denver about a scam that involves callers claiming to be with either department.

The officer impersonators then ask for money. The Denver Sheriff and Police Departments want everyone to know that they never call anyone asking for money.

The scam works like this: callers claiming to be with the department tell the person they owe money for an outstanding warrant. The person might be asked to call another number to make a payment.

In another case the caller told the person they missed jury duty and a warrant had been issued for their arrest. They were advised they needed pay the fines or go to jail.

Residents are warned not to be deceived by caller IDs which might be associated with the City and County of Denver or the Denver Sheriff Department.

Police say if you receive a scam call of this nature, hang up and call the Denver Police Department at 720.913.2000.
