Colorado Disaster Workers Deploying To Texas For Flood Relief

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- A volunteer with the American Red Cross departed from Colorado Springs on Saturday to Houston, Texas to help with the flood response.

Sally Broomfield will serve as the Planning Section Chief where she will be responsible for the collection, evaluation, dissemination and use of information associated with the disaster response.

A powerful storm system rumbled through Texas on Saturday, flooding roads and causing a freight train to derail as parts of the state braced for the remnants of Hurricane Patricia to arrive.

Many parts of Texas, including its biggest cities, were under flash flood watches through Sunday or Monday. The remnants of Patricia, which was downgraded to tropical storm status and was expected to reach northern Mexico by Saturday night, were expected add to the rain falling in South and Central Texas, said Jesse Moore, a National Weather Service forecaster in Fort Worth.

The storm system already moving through Texas dumped more than a foot of rain on parts of the state on Friday, causing flooding that blocked several major roadways.

Broomfield has been with the Red Cross since 2012 and currently serves as the Disaster Program Manager for the American Red Cross of Southeastern Colorado. She has deployed to several local and national disaster operations including the Black Forest Fire and the 2013 Colorado Floods.
