Colorado High School Grad Christian McCaffrey Now In The Heisman Conversation

STANFORD, Calif. (CBS4) - A former star Colorado high school football player is now playing so well at the next level that he is considered a contender for the Heisman Trophy.

It's still early in the season, but Valor Christian High School grad Christian McCaffrey is racking up yards and dropping jaws for the Stanford Cardinal.

During a 56-35 win over UCLA on Thursday night, McCaffrey ran for a school record 243 yards, breaking Toby Gerhart's school record. He also scored four touchdowns in the game and wound up with 369 all-purpose yards.

He now leads the NCAA in all-purpose yardage.

McCaffrey is the son of former Stanford and Denver Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, but Broncos fans might not want to hear that he cited the New England Patriots mantra "Do your Job" as a reason for his team's success.

"'Do your job and do it well' -- that's something that we've really honed in on this season," McCaffrey said after Thursday's game. "We're going to come and prepare like we do each week, and that's with a lot of focus and attention to detail and intensity in practice."
