Rock 'N' Roll Half-Marathon Marks Healthy Milestone

DENVER (CBS4) - Nearly 15,000 runners are signed up for the Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon & 1/2, and most of them will be marking some sort of personal milestone. Julie Palen is among those runners.

"I'm working towards it as a real goal for me to push myself to do my best time," Palen said of the race.

She will run/walk the half-marathon along with 29 of her closest compatriots. They are all graduates of Destination Boot Camp at the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center.

"It's hard work. It's not an easy program, but if you do it, it's amazing," Palen told CBS4.

Destination Boot Camp is a six-day program in which participants learn the science behind weight loss. Julie has lost 50 pounds since going to the camp. But more importantly she's embraced a healthier lifestyle. She moved to Colorado where she says an active lifestyle is natural.

"What was the surprise was how much time was spent in the classroom working on mind set exercises," Palen said.

Now Palen and her boot camp class will reunite to tackle 13.1 miles.

"Certainly, there aren't any of us who are going to set any records this week," Palen said.

Just crossing the finish line will be record enough for the entire group.
