Bomb Squad Called To Hyatt Downtown, Guests Evacuated

DENVER (CBS4)- The bomb squad was called to the Hyatt Regency located in downtown Denver on reports of a suspicious vehicle. Guests of the hotel were evacuated early Saturday morning.

The investigation started around 11 p.m. Friday when police blocked off the streets surrounding the hotel.

Hundreds of guests at the Hyatt at the Colorado Convention Center poured out into the streets a short time later when the hotel was evacuated.

The bomb squad was called in to investigate a suspicious vehicle. Police told CBS4 that nothing suspicious was found inside the vehicle. It is unclear what was in the car or who it belongs to.

"I was lying in bed then the loud speaker comes on, 'Attention please, attention please, we've found it necessary to evacuate,'" said guest Valerie Trent.

Many of the guests were staying at the hotel as part of a convention. It is unclear how many guests were evacuated but the hotel's website states that there are 1,100 guest rooms.

The guests were sent to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.

"The hotel brought out a bunch of water and treats, I guess you could call them snacks," said guest Jonathan Early.

Denver Police are investigating the incident. They are questioning a person of interest but haven't made any arrests.

"You just want to make sure you're cooperating and that basically, you've got what you need and you're leaving as quickly as you can," said guest Lisa Lockwood.

No one was injured.

Guests were allowed to return to their rooms after 4 a.m. Saturday.

The Hyatt Regency Denver released this statement on Saturday afternoon: The safety and security of our guests and associates is our primary concern. In full cooperation with the Denver Police and Denver Fire Department, we took the most cautious approach in evacuating the hotel. This process went very well. We welcomed the guests back to the hotel once given the "all clear". We have received many positive comments on the professional of our staff and this issue was resolved without incident.

The Denver Police Department has concluded its investigation and Hyatt Regency Denver has resumed normal operations.
