Colorado Lawmakers Weigh Electronic Police Citations
DENVER (AP) — Colorado lawmakers are considering having some police agencies issue citations electronically as a way to ease data collection on racial profiling.
A committee charged with finding ways to collect profiling data pitched the idea Monday. The proposal includes a new optional system of people self-reporting their ethnicity when they get a driver's licenses.
Lawmakers are drafting the bill for next year. The measure would start as a test pilot for up to five years, with six yet-to-be named agencies and the state patrol participating through a grant program.
Alabama and Maryland already have e-ticketing systems.
The committee was created this year as part of a package of legislation lawmakers passed to place greater oversight on police in the aftermath of high-profile incidents of alleged officer misconduct nationwide.
