2 Firefighters Suffer Injuries Battling House Fire In Cherry Hills Village

CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. (CBS4) - Two South Metro firefighters were taken to the hospital after a fire at a home in Cherry Hills Village on Saturday.

"My understanding is it's two unrelated events that created their injuries," said Eric Hurst with South Metro Fire Rescue Authority.

Hurst also said the injuries are minor and the firefighters sought treatment as a precaution.

"When crews arrived on scene they found there was smoke visible from the home, called in more help at that point," said Hurst.

Ten engines and dozens of firefighters responded to the call. The emergency was reported by a security system's smoke detector around 1 p.m. Nobody was at the home when the fire started.

"They found a fire on the back side of the house which had extended up into the roof structure and the attic," said Hurst. "The roof of this home is very highly sloped and it also has a tile roof which is difficult for our firefighters to break through. This required a lot of extra labor to break apart those roof tiles before they could actually get to the fire underneath."

Saturday's unseasonably hot weather may have helped the fire spread and wore out firefighters.

"It's like a summer day out here today, so wearing the gear and all that heaviness, being up on the roof, having to stretch hose lines a far distance can be very difficult," Hurst said.
