Murdered Cab Driver Took 2nd Job After Wife Was Injured

DENVER (CBS4)- The cab driver who was murdered while on the job early Saturday morning had taken the position to help pay the bills after his wife became injured.

Darren Bloomquist, 49, was shot and killed after 4 a.m. Saturday in Green Valley Ranch.

Bloomquist's cab was discovered by neighbors after it crashed into a parked SUV. Police were called by Metro Taxi to make welfare check of Bloomquist. A policeman arriving on the scene quickly called for the homicide detectives.

Neighbors say they saw police counting cash on the trunk of the cab, but police are not saying whether robbery was the motive. A police spokesman told CBS4 the murder of a cabbie is out of the ordinary in Denver.

His co-workers at Metro Taxi say Bloomquist was a fun loving and nice guy.

"He was always happy and I never heard him complain about anything," said Metro Taxi General Manager Kyle Brown.

Bloomquist was moonlighting as a taxi driver to help pay the bills after his wife was injured at work and became disabled.

Police have not identified any suspects in the shooting.
