14-Year-Old Killed, 17-Year-Old Injured, 18-Year-Old Arrested In Aurora Shooting

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - One teen is dead and another was injured in a late night shooting in Aurora on Wednesday.

It happened about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fitzsimmons Place Apartments on Nome Street near East Colfax.

Shavonne Hogue lives at the complex and told CBS4, "I heard gunshots then kids screaming. That's when I came outside... and saw him laid out. My friend tried to give him CPR. He was breathing then just gone."

According to Crystal McCoy with Aurora police, at approximately 10:30 p.m. Wednesday officers responded to a report of a "weapons offense" in the 1500 block of North Nome Street.

"When officers arrived they located two juveniles with suspected gunshot wounds," McCoy said in a statement. "Both juveniles were transported to hospitals where one juvenile was pronounced deceased."

Ronald Blan with the Gang Rescue Support Project says he knew the victim, Marcell Johnson, 14. He says Johnson had gang connections and that likely lead to his death.

"When you claim you're a gang member or even just a part of a gang or you hang with them you all of the sudden make your whole family a target. Unfortunately we've got young people losing their lives just because of who they stick around...a mom has to bury a 14 year old son. It's heartbreaking," said Blan.

Blan says he's worried about retaliation. Johnson attended Aurora West school last year.

"They just lost somebody close to them. Right away the mentality is we've got to do something right now. We need to prove ourselves. We've got workers in the school talking to kids and we're sending the message retaliation is not going to happen," Blan.

James Jason Lee, 18, was arrested on charges of first-degree murder. Police haven't released his mug shot because the investigation is ongoing.

But neighbors are on edge.

Hogue says, "A lot of violence has been going on. I'm scared for my niece and nephew now. One day it's going to happen to somebody I know."

Police have not released the name or condition of the 17 year old who was shot.
