Hunter Arrested, Accused Of Striking Ultralight Pilot

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - A hunter has been arrested for allegedly shooting at and striking the pilot of an ultralight plane in Adams County on Tuesday night.

The pilot made an unexpected landing about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 64th Avenue and Calhoun Byers Road, in unincorporated Adams County.

Deputies responded to that area to investigate a shots fired call. When they arrived they met with three people, the pilot of the small fixed-wing plane and two hunters.

The Adams County Sheriff's Office says the pilot, James Johnson, sustained minor injuries. He told investigators he was flying his plane to check on his irrigation system in his cornfield when he was shot.

Investigators combed the field Tuesday night for evidence.

"The hunters were legally hunting on private property," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

One of the hunters, Frank Urban, was arrested for second-degree assault.

The hunters were not hurt.
