Meet The 3 Young Ladies Who Play Matilda In 'Matilda The Musical'

DENVER (CBS4) - In a show called "Matilda the Musical" -- about a magical little girl -- they need many young actresses with high energy to pull off the part. Critic at Large Greg Moody met three young performers on their way to Denver to star in the show.

It takes a special actress to play Matilda in "Matilda the Musical". She has got to be tough and tender, funny and full of magical energy. And it takes three actresses to carry it off each and every week. Mia Jenness, Mabel Tyler and Gabby Gutierrez hand off the part a couple of times a week and each brings something new to the show.

"The energy is a bit different, and that's fantastic because every night it's like … 'Oh, that comes with Mia's energy, that comes with Gabby's energy, and that comes with Mabel's energy,'" said Quinn Mattfeld, who plays Mr. Wormwood.

And the three young ladies really love the character.

"You get to inspire some people who are watching the show," Gutierrez said. "Like if they're being bullied to stand up for themselves."

"If you just let bullies push you around and you don't stand up for yourself, it won't help you," Tyler said.

"It makes people stand up for what they believe in, and it makes people say, 'Hey, maybe somebody is treating me in a not very nice way, I need to put it right,'" Jenness said.

It can be tough on the road but the three girls have a great time.

"We have this thing called the 'emergency chocolate' back stage, so if we are tired we can just take that," Gutierrez said.

And they're bringing that energy and enthusiasm to the stage as "Matilda the Musical" kicks off a new season for the Denver Center for Performing Arts.

'Matilda the Musical' opens Sept. 9 at the Buell Theatre and runs through the Sept. 20. Tickets are going fast so visit denvercenter.org to get them soon.
