Amputees Get On The Water 'You Can't Live In Fear'

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4)- Amputees gathered at Standley Lake in Westminster on Saturday for the first ever Amputee Water Sports Day where they faced their fears and had a little fun.

"I'm excited to be back out here because you can't live in fear," said wake surfer Kelly Casebere.

Nearly a decade ago Casebere lost her leg in a boating accident but on Saturday she joined nearly two dozen other amputees who got on the eater.

"I think this will open up several eyes," said Casebere.

They could choose from several sports including paddle boarding and wake surfing.

"A lot of times once you become an amputee or you lose a limb you feel like your life's over and this is a great opportunity to say you can still do stuff," said Casebere.

The first of its kind event is put on by The Hangar Clinic, Tommy's, Freedom Innovations and the City of Westminster.

"Our wish is to really empower human potential with what we do everyday," said The Hangar Clinic spokeswoman Erin Nolan. "This clinic is an example of us being able to do that in the community."

Nolan said it's an empowering opportunity for people who have recently lost a limb or children who were born without to try something new. The event also welcomed wounded warriors at Saturday's event.

"I lost my leg in December so I've been able to run and play tennis and now wake surf and it's only been eight months so it's been really great," said Amy, a participant.
