Principal Resigns Position At Cheltenham Elementary School

DENVER (CBS4)- The principal at Cheltenham Elementary School has resigned her position after she was accused of forcing misbehaving children to eat on the floor and allegedly made racist remarks.

Cheltenham Elementary School is located on the 1500 block of Julian Street, just west of Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Kalpana Rao resigned her position as prinicipal at Cheltenham Elementary School on Friday afternoon.

Denver Public Schools said they have been investigating Rao and the allegations for months but their investigation cleared her of any wrongdoing.

"Today, I announced to my staff at Cheltenham that I have decided to step down from my position as principal. While the district's investigation found no basis for the alleged parent concerns, it has become increasingly clear that I may not be in the best position to help the Cheltenham community fully heal. I want to ensure that there are not any distractions from what should always be the primary focus – our fantastic kids," said Rao in a statement.

"We deeply appreciate Dr. Rao's service," said Superintendent Tom Boasberg in a statement. "She is a person of integrity who deeply cares about social justice and improving educational and life opportunities for our kids and families, especially those who most need those opportunities."

The district has appointed CJ Grace as interim principal of Cheltenham.
