78-Year-Old Man Critical After Rear-Ending Unmarked Police Car

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A 78-year-old man is in critical condition after rear-ending an unmarked police car at a high rate of speed Wednesday afternoon.

According to Lt. Michael McClelland, officers responded to a report of a crash with injuries in the southbound lanes of Interstate 225 and East Iliff Avenue just before 2 p.m.

"Upon arrival it was determined a City of Aurora unmarked police vehicle with two undercover officers were traveling in the No. 4 lane behind slow moving traffic just north of the East Iliff Avenue off-ramp. A green in color Ford minivan driven by a 78-year-old male suddenly approached from behind at a high rate of speed and rear ended the unmarked police vehicle," McClelland said in a statement.

The minivan then crashed into the west retaining wall. The driver was administered CPR and taken to Aurora South Medical Center.

"It is unknown at this time if he suffered a medical episode prior to the crash or after," McClelland said.

Two undercover officers were also transported and treated for minor injuries.

No names have been released.
