Broncos Notebook - Aug. 11, 2015: Chris Harris Sits Out

NFL Films was at Broncos Camp today. Their focus, Rookie Linebacker Shane Ray. Ray will appear on the upcoming series "Hey Rookie, Welcome to the NFL." Films had the University of Missouri product mic'ed up for the morning session.

Fans are allowed to view Camp again. Practice will be open tomorrow morning. The morning practice begins at 9:30 a.m.

Lots of lightning and thunder around Broncos HQ this afternoon. But, nothing comparable to yesterday's deluge.

The following is a running log from Rod Smith today. Rod informally spoke to various members of the media. Some of the things he said are NOT verbatim. I jotted down some highlights in a Notebook form. When Rod speaks, people listen.

Play football, not receiver.
Don't act like a backup.
Rod kept his own stats when he was on practice squad.
Rod has the highest wining percentage as a receiver in the NFL.
When you walk alone, you are just out for a walk.
Social Media can divide a locker room.
Put down your phone and have a face to face conversation.
The Broncos paid for DT's leadership, not his talent.
When you play for the Broncos, you are treated like family.
DT needs to be hands on with his teammates.
Players need to police one another.
I love teaching.
When you hear it from a player, it means more than when you hear it from a coach.
Wining means your group came together better than the other group.
Play the way to play it as if you are not getting paid.
First time at camp was today.
Rod waits to see how guys perform when they are tired.
Success has a discipline attached to it.
It's Mr. B's(Bowlen) Ring(ring of fame).
One of the best conversations he ever had was 3 years ago in Mr. B's office foe 45 minutes.
Mr. B never wanted the spotlight.
Players need to understand the heritage of the NFL.
Be respectful of the platform that you have.
Kubiak will get the 53 best players.
Rod never missed an offseason workout.
He originally went to the offseason workouts out of necessity.
Workouts were worth $40.00 a day/$240.00 a week. when Rod started.
He turned down $10,000.00 opportunities, if it meant he had to miss a workout.

Again, these are the observations I witnessed and noted as Rod Smith spoke. Everything is generalized.

The "Bane" looking character is D-Lineman Marvin Austin. He is using an altitude simulating mask during his workout. Seems silly to me, since he is already at altitude. Taking it to the next level I guess. You never know when you might be playing on Mt. Kilimanjaro. The Broncos do play in Seattle on Friday, and Mt. Ranier is right around the corner.

Looks like it's alumni day at Broncos HQ. Broncos' Ring of Famer Rod Smith and former TE Tony Scheffler attended today's workout. No Fans today due to yesterday's storms. The field held up well. The team is out there today.

The Turf crew deserves a gold star for their efforts. Chris Harris is not practicing today. Do not have the 4-1-1 yet. He was off to the side working with Strength and Conditioning Coach Luke Richesson.

Players are performing in "Shells" today. That is just a fancy way of saying helmets and shoulder pads. Or, in coach speak, "underwear" with helmets and shoulder pads.

Chris Harris is not practicing today.  I do not know the reason yet.  He was off to the side with Strength and Conditioning Coach Luke Richesson working on his lower body. - Brian Madden, CBS4 Sports
