DENVER (CBS4)Furniture Row Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. mathematically clinched a Chase for the Sprint Cup playoff berth despite a poor showing in Watkins Glen on Sunday.

Truex was having a great race and was positioned for a Top 5 finish on Sunday but his car suffered a flat tire with 22 laps remaining and he finished 25th. Yet the finish was enough to qualify him for the playoff berth with four races remaining in the regular season.

It will be Truex’s third Chase appearance and second in the last three years.

“We’ve had a season of strong performances so far and it feels great to know that we’ll be one of the Chase participants,” Truex said. “We have high expectations for the Chase — I think we’ve proven that we can compete with the best-of-the-best.”
