Person Steps On Grenade On Shore Of Colorado Lake

BROOMFIELD, Colo. (AP) — Authorities say a person walking around a lake near Broomfield unknowingly stepped on a live hand grenade but it didn't detonate.

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office says Rachel Wine and Anthony Perkins were taking a walk around a part of Stearns Lake where the water had receded when one of them stepped on the device Tuesday evening. They moved away and called authorities. No one else was in the area at the time.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Heidi Prentup says the bomb squad determined that the grenade was likely from the World War II era. It had developed rust from being under water at the lake and the squad decided to use explosives to detonate the grenade at the lake. They have no idea how it got there.
