LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Longmont have arrested a man who fled a traffic stop with a hunting rifle after being shot by an officer Monday afternoon.

According to Longmont Police Chief Craig Earhart, the incident began as a traffic stop at Elk Place and Lashley Street just after 4:30 p.m. An officer pulled the vehicle over because it was believed it was involved in an earlier theft. The suspect then exited the vehicle with a hunting rifle.

The officer shot at the suspect who then fled into a neighborhood. The officer wasn't sure if the suspect was hit but after he was found he was suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

According to Earhart, some residents called police to tell them the gunman had run through their house. Police followed his trail and surrounded another house. The next-door neighbor to that house noticed the side door to her garage was open and called police dispatch saying it shouldn't be.

Police then looked inside the garage and saw bloody clothing just inside the door. Officers used chemicals to try to coax the suspect out of the garage. They also sent in a canine to try to get him out but the dog couldn't access the attic in the garage. Rosales eventually held his hands up out of a garage window indicating he wanted to surrender.

He was transported to Longmont United Hospital to be treated for his gunshot wound. His condition hasn't been released.
