Enduro World Series In Crested Butte Canceled After Participant Dies In Crash

CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. (CBS4) - The Enduro World Series that was being held in Crested Butte has been canceled after a competitor was killed during the Saturday's Stage 3 of the Big Mountain Enduro.

The fatality occurred just before noon in the Gunnison National Forest on Trail 400, Star Pass, near the Block and Tackle Trail.

The victim has been identified as William Dean Olson, 40, of Edwards.

"Two interval riders following the victim immediately began CPR and continued for approximately 30 minutes with race personnel arriving at the scene and continuing CPR for a minimum of 30 minutes longer," Crested Butte police said in a statement. "A paramedic, transported by CareFlight Helicopter, arrived on scene and pronounced the rider deceased."

"With respect for the rider and their family, this round of the Enduro World Series competition has been canceled. Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to the rider's family," race organizers said in a statement.
