ASPEN, Colo. (AP) – Police have arrested the man they say was armed with a hammer when he robbed an Aspen marijuana dispensary of $11,000 worth of the drug.

Police had been communicating with 21-year-old Hayden May through his family, and the suspect was expected to turn himself in by 5 p.m. Wednesday. When he hadn’t shown up by 5:45 p.m., police released his name and photo. Police say he was arrested at 7 p.m. outside St. Louis, Missouri.

May had gone into “Stash” on Tuesday. The dispensary’s owner, Garrett Pattrick, says May approached employees with a hammer and apologized for being “desperate” before taking jars of marijuana from behind the counter.

Employees at the store had apparently been friends with May and recognized him.

He is charged with aggravated robbery, theft and harassment.
