Sexual Predator Dies While In Police Custody In Golden

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) - A sexually violent predator with a long criminal history died while in police custody in Golden on Tuesday.

According to Golden police, at 10:15 a.m. officers were called to assist U.S. Marshals in the arrest of a man who had violated parole in Maryland.

"When officers arrived at his place of employment, the suspect was seen fleeing the area on foot," Karlyn Tilley with Boulder police said in a statement. "Two other officers who were in the area working on an unrelated incident came upon the suspect as he was walking away and told him to stop. The suspect walked toward the officers and did not do as he was ordered. The officer put him in an arm restraint taking him to the ground in order to handcuff him."

The suspect was eventually placed in the back of a patrol car.

"Within a few minutes of being in the car, the officers noticed the suspect was sweating profusely, becoming unresponsive but breathing," Tilley said. "They immediately called for an ambulance."

The 51-year-old man was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital where he later died.

The suspect is believed to have "pre-existing medical conditions which contributed to his death."

Police haven't released the man's name.

"It does not appear that his death was caused by being taken into custody," Tilley said.

The death remains under investigation.
