Woman Walks Out Of REI With FitBit Activity Trackers Worth Thousands

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - Police are searching for a woman caught on camera stuffing FitBit devices into a bag at a Boulder REI store.

It happened July 3, and surveillance shows the woman loading 31 FitBits into a red shopping bag then walking out. Police say she left with thousands of dollars' worth of the devices that track activity levels.

"What kind of person would steal a FitBit from REI … it feels a bit weird," said REI customer Kimberly Wolf.

FitBits have quickly gained popularity across the country. Customer Kyle Rhodes said the FitBit size and popularity make them a perfect target for thieves.

"Those are kind of a demand, trendy piece of equipment that is small, easy to pocket," said Rhodes.

She believes the crook will have no problem finding buyers online.

"Things tend to be a little more expensive at retail. I know a lot of people that would," said Rhodes.

Police say the woman may have also committed similar crimes at other REI stores in the metro area.

Corbin Kunst believes if the Boulder police can't catch her, karma will.

"Kind of a karmic thing, it's  gonna come back to her, whether she gets caught or things get stolen from her," he said.

The suspect is described as an African American woman, 25 to 35 years old with shoulder length black hair and freckles. Anyone with information is asked to call Northern Colorado Crimestoppers, or Boulder Police.
