The pit bull, named Beefcakes by his rescuers, suffered serious injuries when he was found shot earlier this month.

Deputies with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office arrested Russell William Middleton, 38, for three felony charges and one misdemeanor charge in the shooting of the dog.

The Longmont Humane Society and Boulder County Sheriff’s Office posted pictures of the pit bull on Facebook which led to tips from the community who recognized the dog. Middleton was the previous owner of the dog he called Ice Tee.

A two-door red pickup truck was seen leaving the area of St. Vrain Road and Highway 36 on July 7. The responding deputy found a stray dog wandering in a parking lot. The dog was badly injured, yet greeted the officer in a very friendly manner.

After those tips came in, a warrant was issued for Middleton and he was arrested on Monday evening.

Beefcakes has been undergoing treatment for serious injury to his jaw.
