'It Seemed Really Brutal' Says Witness To Officer-Involved Shooting

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - Two Fort Collins police officers are on paid administrative after shooting a 22-year-old man to death early Saturday.

The man allegedly stabbed a woman moments before the shooting. Police say he was assaulting the woman when they arrived and then began approaching two officers with a knife and ignoring their calls to drop the weapon. They fired after that.

The crime happened just before 4 a.m. at 1225 West Prospect Road.

The woman who was stabbed was taken to the hospital and was described as having non-life threatening injuries.

A person who first called for help at the scene told dispatchers the man was threatening others and making suicidal statements, according to authorities.

Witness Nick Volpe woke up to the sounds of fighting and yelling outside of his apartment.

"The amount of shots that I heard, it seemed really brutal," Volpe said. "The shooter kept on repeating, 'Drop the knife, drop the knife, I will shoot you if you don't drop the knife.' And he said, 'Do it (expletive).' "

"They told him that, 'If you move toward us again, we will shoot you.' And then he lunged at the officers," Cory Christensen with Fort Collins police said. "The officers had very little time than to do much more than just react."

Officer Tyler Patterson and officer Adam Brunjes are on paid administrative leave which is standard policy. The man who was shot has not been identified.
