Democrats Pick Sen. Guzman Of Denver As New Chamber Leader

DENVER (AP) — Senate Democrats picked Sen. Lucia Guzman of Denver to be their new leader in the chamber.

Guzman was selected unanimously Wednesday. She is taking the position from Aurora Sen. Morgan Carroll, who remains in office but gave up her leadership role to make a run for the 6th Congressional District against Republican Rep. Mike Coffman in 2016.

Guzman is the daughter of Mexican farm workers. She was born in Texas.

In her speech before her leadership selection, she remembered her father's hard work and said it was an important day, "not for me, but for my daddy."

Republicans hold a one-vote advantage in the Senate so Guzman will hold the title of minority leader. Democrats say Guzman is the first Hispanic lawmaker to hold that position in the Colorado Senate.
