Weapons Turned In After Deadly Shooting Of Camper

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (AP) - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has received at least one weapon for testing after a camper was killed earlier this month. It's the latest tactic as investigators work to determine where the fatal bullet came from.

Investigators believe 60-year-old Glenn Martin was likely shot by accident by a high-powered rifle while camping in the Rainbow Falls Park area of the Pike National Forest on July 3.

Douglas County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Ron Hanavan says numerous people were shooting in the area that day and some may be worried that they may have fired the fatal shot.

"More than likely an errant bullet," said Hanavan.

A man dropped off one weapon for testing and Hanavan said they expect two additional guns to be turned in for testing.

"An adult male did turn in a high-powered rifle," said Hanavan.

Hanavan said that man had been shooting illegally in the Pike National Forest on the day Martin was struck by a bullet while camping. His identity has not been released.

The sheriff's office is asking anyone who fired their weapon that day to bring in their firearm for ballistics testing.

"This does give the ability for an individual to possibly give them peace of mind as to whether or not their gun was involved," said Hanavan.

The shooting left Martin's family heartbroken.

"That person needs to know what they've done because they've ruined our lives," said Martin's daughter Carlie.

Army veteran Daniel Whitaker sells firearms at Cash in a Flash pawn shop in Castle Rock and says Martin's death in inexcusable.

"People don't have much gun safety anymore. They shoot, they don't read signs, if it says 'Don't Shoot' then don't shoot," said Whitaker. "A life was lost and I know that guy is going to be living with that regret for the rest of his life."
