Public Pot Smoking Group Discusses Ballot Measure With City Council

DENVER (CBS4)- Voters in Denver could face another marijuana issue on this fall's ballot. This time about public pot smoking.

"One of our real concerns is a number of tourists who talk about how they have no place to go. We've heard complaints of people smoking in their hotel rooms or streets, parks or other things because there's no venue," said attorney Christian Sederberg.

On Friday, the group behind the proposal, the Marijuana Policy Project, met with the Denver City Council to discuss details of exactly where pot smokers could light up.

Proponents say it's all about establishing safe and regulated areas for people to consume marijuana.

Because of the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act it's unlikely that several indoor cannabis clubs would show up in Denver. It could still be possible but organizers said they're trying to establish a framework for the City of Denver to allow smoking outdoors at establishments that want to offer that option.

"That will provide access to adults 21 and over to have establishments to go, in a limited manner, for marijuana consumption," said Sederberg.

Organizers are planning to canvass the streets over the Fourth of July weekend to gather signatures. If they collect more than 5,000 the measure could be placed on the November ballot.
