Attacker Sentenced To 28 Years In Prison

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4)- A man who attacked a woman inside her home in Castle Rock was sentenced to nearly three decades behind bars on Thursday.

Robert Doyle attacked 73-year-old Wilberta Landis inside her home on New Year's Day 2014. Doyle, 23, beat her with a metal broomstick but she still tried to fight back.

"It was fast and furious. And when he was beating me the second time, I'm thinking this can't be real. I'm in my own home. This can't be happening," said Landis.

Doyle broke into her home in the early morning hours and beat her multiple times. Landis also tried to break into a liquor store, got into a fight, stole a BMX bicycle, vandalized several cars and then targeted Landis inside her home.

Doyle said he doesn't remember any of it and that he was under the influence of alcohol.

"Alcohol is an excuse, it's not a defense. At one point Doyle's mother said she was to blame, another point that alcohol is to blame. There's only one person to blame. It's the defendant," said 18th Judicial District Assistant District Attorney Mark Hurlbert.

Doyle's mother said he has struggled with alcohol abuse for a long time.

Doyle was arrested a short time later.

Landis said she, too, feels like a prisoner, even now installing bars on her home after having her sense of security shaken.

"I couldn't sleep for a long time. So my husband had to put bars on the windows. I still hear noises at night and it's that panicked feeling," said Landis. "I'm ready to put it to bed and not be his victim anymore."

Doyle was convicted of several charges including first-degree assault of an at-risk with a deadly weapon resulting in serious bodily injury, second-degree burglary, criminal mischief and theft on May 27.
