Mount Evans Highway Scheduled To Open In Late July

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - The popular summer destination of Mount Evans won't be accessible by car until the end of July.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said Monday that Highway 5 will be opened in late July, but did not specify an exact date.

In addition to clearing heavy spring snowfall, a construction project that will stabilize the eroding roadway must be completed.

"We know that Mt. Evans is a much-loved destination during the summer months, which is why this project to improve and protect the roadway is so important," CDOT West Program Engineer Steve Harelson said in a prepared statement.

Mount Evans Highway is the highest paved road in the nation. It starts at Echo Lake and ascends to Summit Lake, then continues on to the summit of the 14,264 foot mountain.

Last year the highway closed for the season in September.
