Wanted RTD Bus Robbery Suspect Injured Bus Driver

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (CBS4)- Deputies in the Douglas County Sheriff's Office are searching for a "dangerous" man who robbed a bus driver and hurt him in the process.

The man got on the RTD bus about 9 a.m. Friday in Highlands Ranch. Even though the man didn't have enough money, the driver let him ride anyway.

The man then attacked the bus driver as the bus approached the County Line Station, slamming into him.

"Tried to take off with a stack full of transfer passes and ultimately ended up with one but did injure the RTD driver," said Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Hanavan.

The suspect ran away from the bus after the robbery. He was last seen running up the pedestrian bridge over Interstate 25.

"Very dangerous, that this individual would harm somebody who was just doing the right thing," said Hanavan.

The driver suffered injuries to his shoulder and back.

RTD commuter Alex Edingfield said he believes it was a random attack.

"Sometimes people are verbally abusive but I've never actually seen any real violence on public transit," said Edingfield.

Rider Andrew Hansen said he feels for the driver, "It makes me feel sad.

"They're doing their daily jobs. They don't get to choose who they pick up or what those people are going to react with."

The bus driver was given a few days off and is expected to return to his seat behind the wheel soon.

"Would be nice if they catch the guy," said Hansen.

Anyone with information regarding this crime or recognizes the suspect in the pictures is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867). You can text to CRIMES (274637) then title DMCS and enter your message or send an e-mail to metro-denvercrimestoppers.com. If the information you provide leads to the arrest and charging of a wanted individual, you can receive a cash reward up to $2,000.
