Parents Furious After School Employee Found Passed Out In Bathroom

DENVER (CBS4) - Some parents at a northeast Denver school say they were angry to learn that an employee at the facility apparently had drugs on the property.

The suspect's name and position haven't been released, and officials so far haven't said what her job at the school is.

Denver Center for International Studies at Ford Elementary School is located on the 14,500 block of Maxwell Place. Four first grade girls walked into a restroom there Thursday morning and found a staff member unconscious.

According to a letter sent home to parents, the students thought the staff member was sleeping. But after she was taken to the hospital, she was arrested for allegedly possessing a controlled substance.

Police said they were testing the alleged drugs to confirm what they are.

School counselors talked with the students involved in the incident, but parent Shannon Neely told CBS4 the thought of a school employee having and possibly using drugs on campus makes her worry about the worst.

"She wouldn't be herself, might not make the best judgment calls. And if a kid were to get hold of it, God knows what else would happen," she said.

Neely called the case sad and disgusting.

"I'm angry. I'm very angry, and I don't know what to do," she said.

Lois Hymes, a grandparent of a student at the school, also expressed dismay.

"These are our kids. These are our babies. This is not right," she said.

The suspect is on administrative leave while the investigation takes place.
