Police ID Suspect In Officer-Involved Shooting Near Brown Palace Hotel

DENVER (CBS4) - A suspect was shot after he allegedly starting shooting at police in downtown Denver just after midnight Tuesday.

Police responded to reports of a man with a gun at around midnight near 15th and California.

When police tried to make contact with the man at 17th and California, officers said he started shooting at them.

After gunfire was exchanged the suspect, identified as Chisom Nwandilibe , 28, ran away. Police caught up with him several blocks away near Broadway and Cleveland Place where he was arrested.

"Shots were fired; he fired at officers, officer's returned fire, he took off on foot," Sonny Jackson with Denver police said. "We were able to locate him around Broadway and Cleveland Street."

Nwandilibe suffered injuries not considered to be life-threatening after he was shot in the arm. No officers were hurt.

"Right now he's being held on investigation of first-degree assault to a police officer, weapon by a previous offender and also felony menacing," Jackson said.

More charges could come as police want to talk to anyone who may have seen Nwandilibe Monday night.

"Anybody who might have had this individual pointing a gun at them or anything like that last night, we want to talk with them. That's all part of the case, did he menace anybody else prior to our contact with him?"

Authorities had to close 17th Street to traffic during several hours as police investigated the incident. RTD light rail and bus routes were rerouted during the morning commute.

The shooting investigation took seven hours to complete. All roads that were closed had reopened by 9 a.m.
