Durango's Cody Lyman Performs 'Defending The Caveman' With A 'Fresh Edge'

DENVER (CBS4) - It's perhaps the most popular one-man show in the country -- Rob Becker's "Defending the Caveman." Now it's back in Denver for a limited run at the Garner Galleria Theater, and Critic at Large Greg Moody met the Colorado native taking over the lead role.

"Defending the Caveman" is Rob Becker's one-man comedy that takes on male sensitivity, political correctness relating to the women in their lives, and just what it means nowadays to be a guy.

"In other words he takes us to the real place where we all secretly live," Moody said.

"I think the only thing that you need to enjoy the show is to have loved someone enough to have been frustrated by them at some point," said Cody Lyman of "Defending the Caveman." "What I love about the show is it's a very funny look at how we're different. And it's very fair and balanced and at the end of the night one of my favorite things is sneaking out and watching people leaving the theater arm-in-arm."

As played in this production by Lyman of Durango, the show is a spot-on take of what guys are -- and what they're always apologizing for.

"That's what I love about the show. It's very funny, but it's got a lot of heart to it too, and a lot of truth," Lyman said.

Lyman creates a character not quite as lumpish as Becker, and in doing so gives the show a fresh edge while making it his own, according to Moody.

"It is nicely done," Moody said.

"Defending the Caveman" runs through June at the Garner Galleria Theater. For tickets and information call (303) 893-4100 or visit denvercenter.org.
