Heavy Rain Causes Flood Warnings, Closures In Northeast Colorado

MORGAN COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Heavy rain and snow are causing flooding in some parts of Colorado, especially in the northeast part of the state.

The water is rising and impacting traffic along State Highway 71 north of Brush where crews are still struggling with issues left over from the flooding in September 2013.

The Colorado Department of Transportation announced a permanent closure to State Highway 71. Water has gone over the top washing away 80 feet of the highway.

Crews have been bringing in more material, including large rocks, to try to build up the road again and make permanent repairs. The recent weeks of rain have complicated that process.

CDOT said the silver lining to these extended repairs is they are learning lessons on how to build state highways that will last through flooding.

Crews hope to have temporary fixes complete to get the road back open to traffic in two weeks.
