America's Plans For Memorial Day & Denver's Top Destinations

DENVER (CBS4) - Cookouts are synonymous with pretty much any American holiday, and Memorial Day is no exception. Denver, however, hasn't received the summer weather most expect by the end of May, so many people are heading out of town.

Gas costs roughly a whole dollar less than it did last year at this time, likely contributing to the fact that 75% of Americans traveling over the holiday weekend are doing so by car.

Taos, Durango, and Pagosa Springs are identified by TripAdvisor as the top getaways for travelers from the Denver metro area. These are all within 300 miles, which is a gas tank away (full, one-way tank).

The busiest day of travel will be Friday, May 22 with 39% of travelers departing. 41% plan to return home on Memorial Day (Monday, May 25), however many are extending the holiday as 38% plan to return home on Tuesday.

As for the most popular Memorial Day activities nationwide, you guessed it, attending a cookout is #1. Followed by that is swimming or watersports, third is shopping, fourth is visiting a park or national park, and fifth is hiking.

Since the majority will cooking out, TripAdvisor gathered the top Memorial Day foods. Naturally, first is BBQ: ribs, brisket, chicken or pulled pork. Hamburgers are second, seasonal fruits and veggies are third, hotdogs are fourth and lobster is fifth.

Along with food come beverages. The nation's favorite for Memorial Day is beer, followed by lemonade, and then Margaritas.

Where will you be heading for the holiday?
