Waterton Canyon Trail To Reopen Briefly Before Annual Dust Mitigation Project

LITTLETON, Colo. (CBS4) - After a brief closure the trail in Waterton Canyon will reopen again briefly for recreationists on Wednesday.

The trail had to be closed last Friday after Denver Water inspectors found the High Line Canal diversion structure in the South Platte River was deteriorating. The wooden structure was built in 1870 and helps direct water into the High Line Canal when it's needed.

The trail has been determined to be safe to use but river access for the first 1.5 miles of the canyon will remain closed to the public indefinitely due to safety issues, according to Denver Water.

The trail will be closed to the public once again next Monday for an annual dust mitigation project. It will reopen Friday at 7 a.m.

"The safety of Waterton Canyon users and employees is our top priority," Denver Water's manager of recreation Brandon Ransom said in a statement. "Because the canyon is such a popular recreational amenity for the community, we wanted to open the trail through the weekend, even with the upcoming closure."

The High Line Canal diversion will be refurbished in the fall when water levels are low.
