Restoration Crews Working Nonstop To Repair Flooded Basements
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (CBS4) - A lot of homeowners are dealing with flooded basements following the large amount of moisture that stuck around the Front Range last week.
With so much rain and snow, experts say the water basin is saturated and that water has to go somewhere. In many cases, bad drainage outside homes has water going into basements.
At Doug Hoffacker's Westminster house he was using Mother Nature on Monday to dry out everything from family photos to clothes. His basement flooded Friday after periods of heavy rain.
"It's just so unsettling when you come down and your basement is just trashed. There's water everywhere and you don't know where it's coming from and it's pouring down rain," Hoffacker said.
He discovered that the sump pump in his basement broke. The ongoing rainwater should have been pulled away from the house, but the broken pump left it collecting and flooding the basement.
In Arvada restoration crews on Monday were ripping up carpet and drying things out as well. AP Restoration says they've been working nonstop since Friday, mostly in Arvada and Littleton.
"This morning when I left the office at nine we already had eight new losses by 9 a.m., and it's been that way all weekend," Mark Pijanowski with AP Restoration said.
All the rain water has to go somewhere and it seems with every storm there are lessons learned for homeowners like Hoffacker.
"Make sure your sump pump is covered with your insurance," he said.
Experts say the best thing a homeowner can do is make sure downspouts are clear and water from gutters or sump pumps is being directed away from the home, hopefully into the street. When rain is coming it's worth checking elements on the outside and knowing what the insurance policy covers before a problem arises.
