Police: Man Shot By Deputy In Colorado Springs Was Wielding Knife

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Colorado Springs police say a man shot and wounded by a sheriff's deputy in a Hobby Lobby was a knife-wielding escaped prisoner.

According to a statement from spokeswoman Lt. Catherine Buckley, the 48-year-old man, who was not identified, was being treated at a local hospital and in custody for a parole violation and escape Monday. Buckley added she could not say from which facility the man had escaped or give further details about Friday's shooting.

The El Paso County deputy involved is on routine administrative leave and police violent crimes unit detectives are investigating.

Witnesses said they heard two shots, and then a third after a pause. They said they ran out of the store when they realized it was gunfire.
